The protests were also in solidarity with a 21-year-old anarchist and friend of Mr. Grigoropoulos who is in the fourth week of a hunger strike, demanding prison leaves to attend college lectures. Many sympathize with the man, Nikos Romanos, whose life they believe was transformed when he witnessed the death of his friend in 2008. He was convicted of armed bank robbery this October.
